About the Bengali Calendar

The Bengali calendar (বঙ্গাব্দ, Bônggabdô) is a solar calendar that has governed the rhythm of life across Bengal for centuries. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Bengali year starts with Pohela Boishakh — celebrated every April 14th as the Bengali New Year — a festival of joy, color, and cultural pride.

In 1987, the Bangla Academy officially reformed the calendar for Bangladesh to standardize month lengths and align more precisely with the Gregorian system. The first five months each have 31 days; the remaining seven months each have 30 days. A leap day is added in Falgun every four years.

The Bengali era (BS) is roughly 593–594 years behind the Gregorian era (AD/CE). For dates after Pohela Boishakh, subtract 593; for dates before, subtract 594.

How is the Bengali year calculated?
The Bengali year (Bongabda) started with King Akbar's revenue reform in 593 CE. To find the Bengali year for a Gregorian date after April 14th, subtract 593 from the Gregorian year. For dates before April 14th, subtract 594. For example, April 1, 2026 falls before Pohela Boishakh, so the Bengali year is 2026 – 594 = 1432 BS.
What is Pohela Boishakh?
Pohela Boishakh (পহেলা বৈশাখ) is the Bengali New Year — celebrated every April 14th in Bangladesh and April 14th or 15th in West Bengal. It marks the first day of the month of Baishakh and is one of the most vibrant cultural festivals of the Bengali community worldwide.
What reform was made in 1987 to the Bengali calendar?
The Bangla Academy of Bangladesh officially revised the calendar in 1987. The key change: the first five months (Baishakh to Bhadra) were fixed at 31 days each, and the remaining seven months at 30 days each. This created a more predictable calendar aligned with the Gregorian system, replacing older irregular month lengths.
Are the results here accurate?
Yes. Bangla Date Converter uses the official Bangla Academy 1987 reformed calendar algorithm for all Bengali date calculations. Hijri dates use the standard Islamic lunar calendar. All calculations run locally in your browser — no server, no delays, and no data collected.
What are the six Bengali seasons?
The Bengali calendar recognizes six beautiful seasons: Grishma (গ্রীষ্ম, Summer – Baishakh & Jyaistha), Barsha (বর্ষা, Monsoon – Ashadha & Shravana), Sharat (শরৎ, Autumn – Bhadra & Ashwin), Hemanta (হেমন্ত, Late Autumn – Kartik & Agrahayan), Shīt (শীত, Winter – Poush & Magh), and Basanta (বসন্ত, Spring – Falgun & Chaitra).
